152 minutes — PG, 35mm, Steven Spielberg, United States, 1987
Steven Spielberg's first dramatic film about World War II (well, the first one not involving Indiana Jones punching Nazis) is an epic told in miniature, from the point of view of a young British boy (a then-13-year-old Christian Bale) caught up in the Japanese occupation of Shanghai. Empire of the Sun deserves every one of its six Oscar nominations.
J.J. Abrams’ Spielberg homage Super 8 also plays this month.
