War Photographer

The Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom invites you to join us  Nov. 23 at the Mayfair Theatre for a special event to mark the International Day of Impunity.

It’s a date set aside around the world on behalf of all those who have been targeted for exercising their right to the freedom of expression: Anja Niedringhaus, Anatoly Klyan, Ali Mustafa, James Foley — the list grows on.
We’ll remember their work with readings from our special guests, then we’ll watch the Oscar-nominated War Photographer.
The documentary tells the story of James Nachtwey, a photojournalist who has lived and worked on the extreme edge of experience.
“Pictures are my testimony,” he has said of three decades and more than 30 wars. “The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated.”
Why do they do it? At James Foley’s memorial, someone offered that the young journalist had risked his life so that “we may open our eyes.”
Please join us at the Mayfair Theatre on Nov. 23. Doors open at 6 p.m. Readings begin at 7 p.m., followed by the film at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $15 available on Event Brite and at the door with proceeds to Mohamed Fahmy’s Free Press Battle.
