———-

A social satire not for the faint of heart, Bloody Oranges holds the late-night spot at IFFO for good reason. With the blackest of humour, it looks at a cross-section of modern French society and what lies beneath the surface. The playfully interconnecting storylines all nod to problems that plague France today such as government cuts and the divide between the generations.

The film starts off with a dance contest and the judge’s over-the-top, heated philosophical discussion about who should be chosen. One of the competitors is a retired couple trying to win to get out of a huge debt. Their ambitious lawyer son is oblivious to their plight. He crosses paths with the government finance minister who makes budget cuts while hiding money in off-shore accounts. Finally, we meet a teenage girl eager to have her first sexual experience and launch her adult life.

Halfway through the film, there is a pause and a quote from Italian Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci: “The old world is dying, the new world struggles to be born. Now is the time of monsters”. After that point, I won’t reveal spoilers but let’s say the satire borders on torture porn, horror movie territory. Director Jean-Christophe Meurisse told the Hollywood Reporter about the film’s title “On the outside, we’re super sweet, we look attractive. But inside us, there’s this bloody juice waiting to explode.” In the end, youth gets its revenge in a satisfyingly gruesome twist.

*This event is a rental. Normal Mayfair prices and memberships do not apply. Advance tickets now available. Tickets on March 19 will be cash only in the box office. (there is an ATM in the cinema’s lobby)

*Please take note that doors open 30 minutes before showtimes. We encourage people to arrive early. We have a small box office, a small candy bar, and a single-screen cinema, meaning that when most of an audience shows up a few minutes before showtime, it causes a bottleneck. If possible, we appreciate you arriving a little bit early to pick out your seat and get your popcorn. Thanks for your help!

Simultaneously, a retired couple overwhelmed by debt tries to win a dance contest, as the minister of economy is suspected of tax evasion, and a teenage girl encounters a sexual maniac, while a young lawyer attempts to climb the social ladder. When the shoe drops, the winner won’t necessarily be the one we expected.
