Highway of Tears

Ottawa, Ontario- “Highway of Tears” is having it’s Ottawa premiere on May 15, 2015 in a special presentation by Canadian filmmaker, Matthew Smiley. The film premiered in March 2014 at the TIFF Human Rights Watch Film Festival and has since gone on to win 3 back to back festivals (Malibu International Film Festival, Zonta Film Festival and Vancouver Women in Film and Television Festival) and selling out various theatres across Canada and the United States.

In the last month, the filmmakers have committed to over 40 screenings in Canada, the United States and in Europe, as the phenomenon of missing and murdered women & girls has been thrown into the spotlight.

“Highway of Tears” will be presented Ottawa at the Mayfair Theatre (1074 Bank Street, Ottawa, Ont) on May 15th @ 4:00pm to 6:00pm with a discussion panel of special guests, including director Matt Smiley and Delilah Saunders to raise awareness about the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada.

The issue of missing and murdered women & girls has been largely neglected by the Canadian government and general public. It is now being pushed into the forefront of public discussion, as families of the over 1,200 missing and murdered women are looking for answers, action and justice. Far too many cases have been neglected and proper investigations need to carried through for countless families to have closure. It’s also an important social discussion that needs to be had in order to protect all Canadian women from violence.
