Khartoum

Five lives, one city…the fate of a nation.

Khartoum – Screening on Saturday January 31 at 1:00pm

Advance tickets now available for Khartoum.

From the metropolis of Khartoum five Sudanese characters: a civil servant, a tea lady, a resistance committee volunteer, and two street boys all in search of freedom, have their stories unexpectedly woven together through animated dreams, street revolutions and a civil war.
Arabic with English subtitles, English.

In 2022, four Sudanese filmmakers, along with a British director-writer, began filming the lives and dreams of five very different citizens in Khartoum.

When filming started, the Sudanese were faced with a military leadership that had brought down the previous civilian government. What started out as a revolution with dreams of a new Sudan, broke out into a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), displacing over ten million people and becoming the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.

Amongst the displaced, were the filmmakers and participants of the film. Fleeing Sudan and finding asylum in east Africa, they continued their innovative cinematic storytelling, combining animation, green screen reconstructions, and documentary ‘dreamscapes’ to tell their stories.

Come join us in the screening of this incredibly powerful film, with opening remarks by Tracey Maulfair, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative to Canada and followed by a Q&A with one of the co-directors and producers of the film, Timea Ahmed.

Preceding the screening, the short film directed by Timea Ahmed, “Is It War?” will be featured.

*This event is a rental, normal Mayfair prices and membership does not apply.

*Please take note that doors open 30 minutes before showtimes. We encourage people to arrive early. We have a small box office, a small candy bar, and a single-screen cinema, meaning that when most of an audience shows up a few minutes before showtime, it causes a bottleneck. If possible, we appreciate you arriving a little bit early to pick out your seat and get your popcorn. Thanks for your help!
