Malevych

Malevych – Screening on September 18!

Advance tickets now available for Malevych!

Malevych is a film about Kazymyr Malevych (often mistakenly referred to as Kazimir Malevich and categorized as part of the Russian avant-garde) — the creator of the legendary Black Square and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
Born in Kyiv, he thought in Ukrainian and drew his artistic inspiration from Ukrainian soil. The film portrays the artist’s struggle to remain true to himself during the turbulent 1930s — an era of repression, censorship, and the Holodomor.
It is not only an artistic drama but also a powerful cultural and historical rehabilitation, restoring Malevych to the world as a Ukrainian artist.

The event is part of Ukrainian Heritage Month in Ontario. Following the screening, there will be an exclusive Q&A session with Ukrainian-Canadian producer Anna Palenchuk and Olga Sobkovych, PhD — art historian, independent researcher, and curator. Her work focuses on Ukrainian art of the early 20th century, its cultural connections, and decolonization.

THE FILM IS IN UKRAINIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES.

*This screening is a rental, normal Mayfair prices do not apply.

*Please take note that doors open 30 minutes before showtimes. We encourage people to arrive early. We have a small box office, a small candy bar, and a single-screen cinema, meaning that when most of an audience shows up a few minutes before showtime, it causes a bottleneck. If possible, we appreciate you arriving a little bit early to pick out your seat and get your popcorn. Thanks for your help!
