Kelp kicks off its 15th anniversary with a show in the newly-renovated Mayfair Theatre, featuring Ottawa favourites the Acorn and Jim Bryson, along with special guest Anders Parker.
THE ACORN released The Pink Ghosts and Blankets several years back on Kelp, before moving on to record with Paper Bag Records (Canada) and Bella Union (UK). This past fall, The Acorn returned to Kelp to deliver a gorgeous split 12″ shared with their friends Ohbijou. Rolf Klausener & co. have been busy and continuing to gain momentum with UK and US tours in 2008 and 2009, and will play this unique set just days before returning to England for yet another tour.
JIM BRYSON will release his Live at The First Baptist Church CD on Kelp on Tuesday April 28th, just in time for this performance. In 2009, Bryson continues to be busy with his numerous “sideman” roles playing with Kathleen Edwards, the Weakerthans and most recently a “very popular Canadian arena rock act.” He will showcase old favourites, as well as songs from a forthcoming album that is in the works.
ANDERS PARKER has been a major influence on me and Kelp since I came across his Varnaline album Man of Sin in 1996. It is an honour to have him play Ottawa for the first time thirteen years later.
Parker has amassed an impressive discography since that album’s release, with further rootsy offerings from Varnaline in the late 90’s, impressive axework for the prog-leaning rock outfit The Space Needle, a collaboration with Jay Farrar (as Gob Iron) and four records credited to his own name. Now based in Burlington, Vermont, Parker continues to churn out melodic roots recordings that ring true, and I have no doubt that Ottawa will embrace his sound with open arms.
