In 1431, Jeanne d’Arc is placed on trial on charges of heresy. The ecclesiastical jurists attempt to force Jeanne to recant her claims of holy visions.

Carl Theodor Dreyer’s classic, with live musical accompaniment by the triumphant return of the VOC Silent Film Harmonic, Canada’s only and award-winning ensemble dedicated to accompanying silent movies.
This movie is elevated by Dreyer’s radical approach — focusing on the actors’ makeup free faces and expressions — and Renée Falconetti’s remarkable performance as Joan, which is widely regarded as an uncontested landmark in acting.

Faro Island Film Festival: Best Film award winner!

5 Stars! “Stunning in its power, uncompromising in its severity and seriousness, Carl Theodor Dreyer’s silent masterpiece from 1928 all but scorches a hole in the screen.” (The Guardian)

5 Stars! “an emotional, spiritual and psychological drama of epic proportions” (BBC)

5 Stars! “The Passion of Joan of Arc is the consummate work of cinema…one of the greatest films that has ever been made – the greatest film, I would say…it has long struck me as the medium’s towering masterpiece.” (Alternate Ending)

*Please take note that doors open 30 minutes before showtimes. We encourage people to arrive early. We have a small box office, a small candy bar, and a single-screen cinema, meaning that when most of an audience shows up a few minutes before showtime, it causes a bottleneck. If possible, we appreciate you arriving a little bit early to pick out your seat and get your popcorn. Thanks for your help!

A classic of the silent age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she'd spoken to God, Jeanne d'Arc is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials. Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom.
